My current and ever-evolving visual commitment is SELFHOOD. Under this name I capture, research, foster and represent Black women resting, as a response to the fundamental question of when and how they get to be human. I propose rest as the answer as only then we get to dream, breathe and care for ourselves. in a world where they are intersectionality racialized, sexualized, stereotyped and overworked. As such, rest is framed as a revolutionary act of freedom.

HUNTU, visualizes stills of togetherness among Black people. Through the practice of holding and breathing, works such as “Maternal Sanctuary” and “Respirando Juntos” hone in on intimate moments, where a mother holding her child and a couple closely breathing together, confirm the possibility of black folks loving tenderly. Importantly so, the contemporary envisioning of black folks holding space for each other and existing without struggle is an act of resistance in itself. Moreover, the centered composition in all four portraits brings their/our humanity to the forefront.
